Hamilton Tile Works
HAMILTON TILE WORKS COMPANY
An 1888 drawing of the HAMILTON TILE WORKS COMPANY.
In 1883 Adolph Metzner leased the site of the former Royal Pottery Company of Hamilton. The property was leased from George A. Rentschler. The business was incorporated in 1884. Metzner and his sons, Otto and Max, after persevering for several years, eventually perfected enameled tile with a very good clay body, handsome designs, and glazes of beauty and color. Before the year was over, the firm was known as the Hamilton Tile Works Company. By 1887 31 people were employed. They manufactured floor and wall tile, and tiles for decorating fireplaces and mantels. The company failed in 1897.
The tile company was located in the vicinity of the northwest corner of 4th and Vine Street. The tiles were usually signed HAMILTON O on the back side.
After the failure of the Hamilton Tile Works, A new ownership group including Rentschler and Henry Sohn of Hamilton organized a new company in 1901 and called it the Ohio Tile Company. The company failed and was dissolved in 1911.
