Tour Guidelines
- You are an Ambassador to Hamilton.
- Wear an ostentatious period outfit so you are both noticeable and fun.
- Be full of life and not boring.
- Potentially speak from the characters point of view. Do not break character.
- Go inside at least one or two buildings.
- Connect the dots between what you're showing your visitors and the history they might already be familiar with.
- Show your visitors some of the photos from this website as needed.
- Potentially coordinate a surprise encounter with a costumed actor, a shop owner, building owner or museum custodian.
- Potentially have props available. For example a hat like the one Mad Anthony Wayne wore.
- At each stop have a question or two ready for your audience to get them engaged.
- Each stop should have a “Drop the mic” moment before you move on.
- For fun, potentially hide something and have a visitor find it.
- Have the visitors try to “find things”.
- Perhaps find a small token or trinket or sip of beer that can be given to each visitor at the end of the trip.
- Try to make each tour both enlightening and humorous.
- Be considerate of people needing a bathroom break.
- Complete your tour at a location that the guests can get a drink.
- Always leave room for the unexpected. A buffer of time.
- A good teacher does not teach facts, he or she teaches enthusiasm, open-mindedness and values.
